Filtering vs Accountability

Filtering apps on computers and mobile devices attempt to block adult content from popping up. Good filters ideally block entire adult websites as well as search results and popups. The goal and benefit of filtering software is to prevent temptation by making dangerous content unavailable.

There are some issues however in only relying on filtering apps:

  • Some pornography or suggestive content may still make it through the filters. No filter is perfect, and new content is constantly produced.

  • At times filters may block content that is actually valid, such as women’s apparel or swimwear. So, your ability to browse the internet freely may be limited.

  • If your goal is for your child is to learn self-control, especially for older teens and young adults, then you may want more access available.

Accountability apps on the other hand do not necessarily filter out any content at all. But they help create good habits by keeping a spouse, friend, or church accountability partner updated weekly or more of questionable sites or apps that are accessed. Good accountability software may also show how long was spent on the site or take screenshots of your activity.

This can foster more self-control.

For younger children we recommend filtering first to stop content as much as possible from even coming up. Use multiple levels of filtering for the best coverage. For older teens we recommend both options. And for anyone actively fighting against a pornography addiction, we strongly recommend accountability software on each and every personal and work device they use with an internet connection.

Examples include Ever Accountable, Covenant Eyes, or Accountable2You.
